Cattery FAQs

Yes, it is a requirement of my boarding establishment licence that all cats boarding be fully inoculated against Cat Flu (Feline Calicivirus and Feline Herpes Virus) and Feline Infectious Enteritis (Feline Panleukopenia). Feline Leukaemia virus is advised for any cats who go outside, but as cats are not in direct contact with each other within the cattery it is not a requirement to board. Please note that cats require 2 weeks after a primary vaccination course for the vaccine to be fully effective, this isn't necessary after a booster vaccination though.

Yes, we ask that all cats boarding are treated with a preparation from the vets for fleas and worms 48 hours prior to arrival. This is due to the RCVS enforcing new guidelines that prohibit any treatment, not prescribed to a specific cat, to be applied. So if your cat was discovered to have an infestation, I would now, potentially have to make trip to the vets for a consultation to be prescribed a treatment to use. This will obviously greatly increase the cost to yourself. It would also incur an additional fee for any environmental spray to be used within the cattery, to ensure no other guests become infected.

No, we're open for reservations 12 months of the year. We're open from 10am to 4pm daily, except for Wednesdays where we are closed for arrivals and departures. We are also closed for arrivals and departures on the 24th, 25th and 26th December and 1st & 2nd January. In certain circumstances, and by previous mutual agreement, arrival and departures may be arranged outwith these times however there will be an out of hours charge for this.

Yes, cats are very adaptable. Their sleeping quarters are warm and cosy offering a safe refuge on a raised ledge with a view over the garden, with various bird feeders and plenty of stimulating wildlife to watch from a comfy bed.

Yes, Crooklands Cattery suites are full height, which means that your cat doesn't have to negotiate a ladder or frame to access their sleeping areas. For our elderly guests, we dress the suite with a rubber backed rug on the floor before then placing their bed, food, water bowls & litter tray in for them. This means that once in their suite, they don't have to come out into the run area to access any requirements, they can remain safe and warm at floor level with no risks of falling.

Yes, as I am a qualified veterinary nurse, I can ensure that medication is given to each boarder. I ask that all medications are brought in the original containers as dispensed by the vet, with a label which is legible and with the current correct dosage.

Any bookings required over the school holidays require as much notice as possible. Normally Summer dates are booked up by February however we do keep a waitlist for any dates that may become available, so it's always worthwhile getting in touch with any enquiries.

All we require is your cats up to date vaccination record card. For a first visit, we normally suggest that you bring along a small blanket or a t-shirt with a familiar scent to help them to settle. Please ensure that the cats are transported in a safe and secure pet carrier, preferably one cat to a carrier. We also ask that all collars are removed while boarding, if preferred, this can be done once the are settled safely in their suite.

Some cats are very shy and timid when they first come into the cattery, and are often better left to explore their new environment alone for a short period of time, whereas others are very bold and are desperate for attention and are ready to play straight away! I enjoy building up a trusting relationship with each guest by spending time grooming or bribing them with treats. And because only I attend to the cats this can be accomplished quite quickly.

The dried foods routinely used within the cattery are Royal Canin Exigent, Purina, Iams and Go Cat. Wet food sachets are Sheba, Felix, Whiskas and Purina. I cannot provide prescription or breed specific diets but I am able to ensure these are fed if provided by yourself. Some cats may take a day or two before they start eating, this can be normal when away from home initially, but I have lots of tasty delicacies to tempt the fussiest of appetites. Bedtime treats include Dreamies, Lick-e-Lix and Thrive dried treats.

No, once the cats are in their allocated suite, they are not allowed out for the duration of their stay. This is a regulation of SLC Boarding Licence and is to reduce the spread of infections and the obvious risk of escape! Cats are also not allowed out of their suites to exercise in the safety corridor for the same reasons.

The day of arrival and the day of departure are both charged in full as the suite is only available for your cats on that day. This is due to my impeccably high standards in regards to the control and prevention of infection and disease within the cattery. Every suite vacated has a thorough deep clean which entails every item to be removed, cleaned and disinfected. This cleaning process is time consuming and essential to prevent any cross contamination between each guest. I aim to always have your cats suite fully disinfected and prepared for your arrival, and would never move a cat to its pet carrier to await collection. Hence, each day is charged in full and cats can can arrive at 10am and depart up to 4pm.

I understand that cats can be very fastidious about their toilet facilities, because of this I use a litter based on corn kernels which clumps well. This allows me to monitor exactly how much and often urine is passed. It's also soft on delicate paws! I have various litter trays to meet with every preference and cats who prefer to toilet outside adapt very quickly.
